We enjoy being outside as much as possible and at this time of year it seems like every weekend we are doing some sort of project or two! From spring clean-up, filling the potholes in the driveway or prepping the garden beds we are constantly doing something- just ask my son! Now that my husband and I have gotten older our aches and pains have definitely increased after a day of activities- more so my husband these days as I had back surgery and am still limited in what I can do. The poor guy definitely hurts at the end of a “honey-do day”. Thankfully we now have TYLENOL® 8 HR Muscle Aches & Pain in our medicine cabinet to help alleviate some of that.
This past weekend my husband was busy tilling our garden, weeding and mowing the lawn so my kids and I decided to make birdhouses out of the bottle gourds we had from last fall. I definitely got the easier of the tasks that weekend! He took TYLENOL® 8 HR Muscle Aches & Pain when he was finished with his chores to help temporarily relieve his minor back ache and pain. Although I failed to grow the Bottle Gourds myself last year I was lucky enough to find a few at a local fall festival last year. Not only did they look great for our fall outdoor decorations, I knew they had a bigger purpose later- birdhouse.
It was really easy to make this gourd birdhouse and here is how we did it:
Step 1- Dry Bottle gourds
We left our gourds in the garage over the winter and they naturally dried out for us to use for this project this spring. You can tell the gourd is dry on the inside when you shake it you should be able to hear some seeds rattling around plus they are very lightweight. I was so excited that they were able to be used for the birdhouses.
Step 2- Clean the gourds
To clean and sanitize the gourd, soak it in a solution made from one part bleach and nine parts water. We soaked ours in an old trash can for about 30 minutes. Completely rinse the gourd in clean water and thoroughly dry. We used old rags to clean off the “skin” and any mold that had grown on the outside of the gourd. Let the gourds dry again after cleaning them. You can also use a little sandpaper if you wanted to.
Step 3 – Making bird opening and drainage holes
Use a drill with the proper attachment to make a 1-1/2” -2″ hole on one side. Drill a few smaller drainage holes on the bottom of the gourd too. We made 4 holes on the bottom of ours. With a spoon or your fingers scrape out the dried seeds and pulp from the inside of the gourd. The kids really like this part!
Step 4- Paint and Decorate
We spray painted our birdhouses with an outdoor colored spray but you can be as creative as you want. Just spray a coat of clear polyurethane on the outside of the house to protect the finish and seal the house when you are finished.
Step 5- Hang the House
Wrap a long piece of twine from the neck of the birdhouse and securely tie where you want. A sturdy tree branch works well- we hung ours from the corner posts of our vegetable garden.
As you can see this is an easy craft to make. If you do not have the patience to grow and dry your own bottle gourds, I am sure you can buy them dried out already. I love that I was able to show all of my children a great new way to enjoy something found in nature.
