How do you keep your children safe online? I ask myself this question all the time. My children are ages 3-13 and I really worry about what my teen is doing on social media and online gaming sites. I am also worried about my 6 year old as well because he plays games on his tablet that have online features and he truly doesn’t know any better. I am always looking for ways to keep them “Cyber Safe” and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America have created resources for parents, teachers and children.

Everyday there seems like there is a new social media platform introduced from Snapchat to Twitter and before you know what is happening your child has an account and has followers. They are innocently roaming the Internet but who can we keep them safe? BGCA is committed to keeping kids safe and online safety is part of today’s society.

What are some of the ways you keep your children safe online? I try to monitor my kids phones, tablets and computers as much as possible. I have turned off the location services setting and pop up features for in-app games as well. For my little ones, it is as simple as me sitting next to them while they are on their devices.  I know that as quickly as I am figuring things out, there are new apps, games and social media that are sprouting up just as fast. I can only hope that my children make the right choice.

June is Internet Safety Awareness Month

Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and Sprint are inviting parents to submit their questions about Internet safety, cyber bullying, online privacy, and other cyber-related issues. The BGCA Safety Ambassadors will answer these questions from a teens’ perspective. They are hoping their answers will provide information to educate parents for their kids. I asked my questions just they other day because I thought it is a great forum and I am looking forward to hearing answers from a teens perspective.

Today’s youth are much more technologically savvy then we are and sometimes we as parents need help and resources to keep our kids Cyber Safe.
