How to Make Marshmallows from Scratch

I have been seeing these amazing posts on homemade marshmallows on the internet lately and was curious about how they came out. I decided to try making marshmallows from scratch and it was pretty easy- a little messy but easy. I loved the ability to flavor the marshmallows to whatever you like as well as dipping them in toppings too.

Making Marshmallows from Scratch

There really isn’t much to making homemade marshmallows. There are only a few ingredients and if you have an electric mixer with a whisk attachment then you are all set. The mixture takes a while to become fluffy so an electric mixer definitely is a must. These marshmallows would make a great hostess gift or new neighbor gift as well.

Homemade Marshmallows Recipe

INGREDIENTS

3 pkgs unflavored gelatin

1 cup cool water

1-1/2 cups sugar

1cup light corn syrup

1 tsp salt

1 TBSP Vanilla Extract

Confectioner’s Sugar to sprinkle on top and sides

Directions

Combine the gelatin and 1/2 cup cold water and set aside.

Heat the sugar, corn syrup, salt and 1/2 cup water in a small deep saucepan. Cook on medium heat until the sugar dissolves.

Raise the heat to high and cook until the temperature reaches 240F. Remove from the heat.

In a n electric mixer with the whisk attachment pour the softened gelatin in the bottom of the bowl and slowly add the sugar mixture on low speed until combined.

Increase the speed to high and whip for about 10 minutes until the mixture has cooled a bit and is light and fluffy. Add the vanilla at the end and mix to combine.

Grease a 9×13 baking pan, then pour in the marshmallow mixture. use wet hands to smooth the marshmallows in the pan.

Top with confectioners sugar.

Let sit for several hours or over night

Cut into shapes and dip into confectioners sugar.

There you have it- homemade marshmallows. As you can see I left mine in squares but you can easily use a cookie cutter to make shapes as well as adding different flavoring likes mint or lemon. These would make a great topper for hot chocolate in the winter or for the ultimate s’more recipe for the summer. Package with graham crackers and chocolate bars for your next get together this summer.
