How to Plant Pussy Willows from a Branch

Have you ever seen Pussy Willow branches at a farmers market or flower market on the corner store in the city? Did you know that you could replant them so that they will bloom for many years to come? I am not speaking of the dried branches of course that you see in arrangements, but the live Pussy Willow bunches you buy from a flower market. Now keep in mind this is my first attempt at doing so but fingers crossed they are doing well.

On our last trip to NYC to see my back surgeon there was an awesome Flower Market on the corner there – you know the ones that have every variety of flower from hydrangeas and roses to tulips and carnations? I was so smitten! I needed something as a pick me up after they told me I was still not supposed to be driving, lifting, bending, etc. from my recent revision back surgeon. (a story for another day, ugh)

Then I saw them- the two last bunches of Pussy Willows and I knew that I needed to take them home with me. I had hoped to be able to replant them as they had already been kept in water from the market. They appeared to have a few new growth shoots on the branches as well, so I was excited!

I brought them home and immediately placed them in a pitcher of water. I left them in the water (adding and changing the water) for a few weeks until I noticed roots growing from the branches. Hooray! I was so excited- first step complete – Root Growth.

Next, I had my son put some potting soil into 2 containers and we planted the branches in the soil, covered and watered them. I put them in two containers, as I did not want to overcrowd them. I was hoping that the more room they had the bigger the roots would get.

They are still in these containers that I am keeping out in the sun and watering when needed. Once there is no danger of frost anymore (around here that is like Memorial Day weekend) I will have my husband plant them in the yard so that they will bloom for many years to come.

I love the look of Pussy Willow branches and bushes- the fact that you can easily re-grow the Pussy Willow from the living branches makes me so happy. I will let you know how we make out once we plant them in the yard! But so far so good!
