Poppin’s Book Nook – It’s A Jungle Out There

Welcome to the next month of the Poppins Book NookIt’s a Jungle Out There! Welcome to another month of the Poppins Book Nook! This month the theme is Jungle. This is one of my favorite books, “Wild About Books” by Judy Sierra and I feel as though it fits into this theme.

This book is probably on a K-2 reading level and the book is about when the Springfield librarian Molly McGrew by mistake drove her bookmobile into the zoo. The animals are fascinated by her reading aloud and soon all of them want to learn how to read too. Molly finds just the perfect book for each animal – tall books for the giraffes, small books for the crickets, joke books for the hyenas. In no time Molly has them going simply wild about the wonderful books. Not only do they read but become writers as well and Molly helps them open their own “zoobrary”.

The illustrations are absolutely adorable and most kids don’t even know what a bookmobile is anymore, at least not around my neck of the woods! I remember being in Pre-K and the bookmobile driving up to school and we got to go inside and pick out books. It was such a special treat and I thought how cool is that?

This book really brings back some fond memories for me of the bookmobile and I hope that it will start some conversations going in your home! Some good questions to ask your children as you are reading are:

1-    How did the librarian get the animals interested in reading?

2-    How do you take care of library books?

3-    Which animal is your favorite in the story and why?

4-    What book would you have chosen for the snake? The bear? Etc.?

Activities for this month

A-    Design a Book Jacket for your favorite animal in the story and their book.

B-   Draw a Map of the Zoo. Be sure to include all the animals and their habitats.
