Poppins Book Nook May 2014 – Fables – The Ugly Duckling

Welcome to the next month of the Poppins Book Nook. This month, the theme was fables and we found “The Ugly Duckling” in my daughters room. This is a classic and a personal favorite. This book is part of the First Readers Series and although there is no author listed on the book, it originates from Hans Christian Anderson.

The ugly Duckling tells the tale of when mother ducks last egg hatches she has a hug surprise! Instead of another fluffy yellow duckling, a big gray duckling hatches instead. Oh no! What will become of him? All of his siblings made fun of him for his looks, he was so sad. The other animals on the farm also made fun of the Ugly Duckling so he ran away until the Spring. When the Ugly Duckling came out in the spring it turned out he had turned into a beautiful white swan. The other swans on the pond wanted to be his friend too.
The moral of the story? Don’t judge a book by its cover or treat people differently because they look different.

This moral reads well in today’s world as well with all of the bullying that goes on in schools. It is good to treat people as you would want them to treat you.
