It is no secret that I love to travel. I find beach destinations relaxing, while my husband loves a little bit of history so to us; Puerto Rico would be a perfect vacation for us. Flying to Puerto Rico from New York is not a long flight either… only about 4 hours – definitely a plus. When my husband and I are traveling as a couple we usually have less than a week at our vacation spot, so a shorter flight is a must. I have put together for you my five “must see” items in Puerto Rico.
- Zip Lines
Do you have an adventure or thrill seeker in your traveling group? If so you must check out ToroVerde. Toroverde is an ecological adventure park that has more miles of zip-line cables than any other place in the world. You will be able to view some of the most amazing views of Puerto Rico while spending time with your travel companions. ToroVerde offers many packages for all levels of adventure seekers.
- Beaches
There is nothing better than laying on a beautiful, peaceful beach. I love the relaxing sound of the water combined with the texture of the sand to offer a completely delightful day of vacation. Puerto Rico has miles of sandy beaches but the one beach you must see is Playa Puerto Nuevo. There is a large rock formation that acts as a natural barrier from the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The sight is spectacular when you see the waves crash into La Pena (the rock formation). Have your cameras ready!
- Old San Juan
As I mentioned before my husband always likes to soak in the natural history of our destination and Puerto Rico is seeped with history. Begin your day excursion by visiting the old fortresses. The massive sites boast cannons, ruins, and stonewalls. Continue with a walk along the old historic city. Be sure to take in the architecture, views, museums and sculptures as you meander through this city bathed in history. Be sure to start at the visitor information center, it has maps and pamphlets to help you plan your day.
- Bioluminescent Bay
Puerto Rico boasts 3 bioluminescent bays. Depending on where you are situated for your vacation will depend on which one is the closest to experience. These luminescent bays are the result of a population of tiny micro-organisms that produce a chemical light when agitated in the water. The light is a striking combination of greens and whites that can only be seen at night. Take one of the many kayak tours available for a once in a lifetime experience.
- Salsa Lessons
The people of Puerto Rico love to dance and there are certainly a plethora of styles to choose from. Most of the bars and nightclubs offer lessons at different times during the week and weekends. Salsa is a fast and sexy dance – one you definitely need to try out and learn. Trust me, it will be fun!
I love that Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. Commonwealth so not only do you not need a passport to visit but the American dollar is the national currency. My husband usually has a hard time when we travel to places where English is not the language of choice but in Puerto Rico most natives speak both Spanish and English, so there is no language barrier there.
