Sea Glass Jello is the perfect way to celebrate the warm weather. Summer is here and there is nothing that I enjoy more than spending time at the beach.
Mermaid Sea Glass Jello
With my feet in the sand, the smell of sunscreen and listening to the waves crash against the shore I know that all is right with the world. This is definitely my happy place.
Sea Glass Jello
These layered jello dessert bars would be perfect for a Finding Dory, mermaid, shark or beach party. They look so pretty and even look great displayed on a dessert table too. Changing the colors you could easily use these for a princess themed brunch or shower too.
I can not be by the beach all summer long so I created a dessert that the family would enjoy that reminds me of the ocean. I love the layered look of these Sea Glass Layered Jell-O Bars and they really are quite easy to make. The key for these bars is to wait until each layer has set so as to not disturb the layer below. I have another layered dessert recipe for Valentine’s Day or really any red/pink layered Jell-O Bar you need- this one is put together a bit differently.
The kids love them as much as the adults!
How to Make Sea Glass Jello?
Sea Glass Layered Jell-O Bars
Ingredients
1- 3oz box of Blue Jell-O
1- 3oz box of Purple Jell-O
2 -1/2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
1 can sweetened condensed milk
Boiling water
Directions:
***Make SURE each LAYER SETS so that they do not combine together!
Spray a 8” square baking pan with non stick cooking spray.
In a bowl combine 1/2 pkg Purple Jell-O, ½ pkg unflavored gelatin and 1 cup of boiling water. Pour into prepared pan and chill for 15-30 minutes.
While waiting- Prepare the creamy layer. In a mixing bowl, combine 1/2 can sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 cup of boiling water. Stir to combine.
In a separate smaller bowl, combine 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 gelatin packet, stir to mix. Allow this gelatin mixture to set for 2-3 minutes. Pour this gelatin mixture into the sweetened condensed milk mixture, and combine. SET ASIDE.
In another bowl sprinkle 1/2 envelope unflavored gelatin and ½ purple Jell-O into ½ cup cold water and let sit for 5 minutes. Add ½ cup boiling water to mixture and stir to dissolve. Let the mixture cool for about 5 minutes. Pour HALF of the condensed milk/gelatin mixture and combine. This will make a creamy light purple color. ** If you do not allow the hot mixture of Jell-O to cool a little bit, the milk/gelatin mixture will curdle.
Pour gently over purple layer that is in refrigerator.
Chill for 15- 30 minutes minutes.
In a bowl combine 1/2 pkg BLUE Jell-O, ½ pkg unflavored gelatin and 1 cup of boiling water. Pour gently over light purple layer in pan and chill for 15-30 minutes.
In a separate bowl sprinkle 1/2 envelope unflavored gelatin and ½ BLUE Jell-O into ½ cup cold water and let sit for 5 minutes. Add ½ cup boiling water to mixture and stir to dissolve. Let the mixture cool for about 5 minutes. Pour the other HALF of the condensed milk/gelatin mixture and combine. This will make a creamy light blue color.
Pour gently over BLUE layer that is in refrigerator and chill for 15-30 minutes.
Cut into squares and serve.
These directions seem really confusing to me. Do you really put 1 cup of water in the first layer then 2 cups plus the milk in the second layer?
Yes- that is exactly correct.
Thanks! I’ll be giving these a try for my daughter’s mermaid-themed 1st birthday in 2 weeks!!
These look amazing! You are sooo talented! Wish I had half the talent and patience to make these sea glass Jell-O bars one of these days. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you- they are not that bad to make just take a little time!
Hello,
I’m a little confused as well. The ingredients say 2 3oz boxes of each jello color. In the directions, you say 1/2 package in the first section and 1/2 package in the second section. Then repeat with purple. What about the second boxes?
Thank you!
Hi Kristie, Sorry for any confusion. I edited the recipe and instructions above and I hope it helps!
Making this for my granddaughter’s birthday today. Wonder if you forgot to mention to cool the second layer before pouring on top of the first? Sadly, my first two layers combined together because the second was too warm.
Sorry Marsha- In the beginning of my post it states ” The key for these bars is to wait until each layer has set so as to not disturb the layer below.” But you are right- I should add to the directions as well. My apologies- I hope you have a great party!
I’m doing the light blue layer but it looks all curdly like it didn’t mix well what went wrong?
Hmmmm— I don’t know Lindsey- was the date on the milk expired? I’ve never had that happen before.
Can you rewrite these directions?
In the recipe you call for a 1/2 can of condensed milk. What size can are you using?
15 oz can –
Thank you for visiting!
My milk layer curdled as well. Can is not expired.
I am sorry to hear that. I rewrote the directions a bit to hopefully clear up the confusion. You must make sure you combine the milk and hot water together first- this should stop the curdling and make for a creamy consistency.
Are you sure this calls for only 3 packs of gelatin? I’ve combined 1/2 pack with purple jello, 1 pack with water, and 1 with purple jello for the condensed milk layer. That’s already 2.5 packs and I haven’t done the blue layers yet…
It should be 1-1/2 packages of gelatin for each color. SOrry for the confusion
Looks very nice! Going to give it a test run at Easter before my Twins Party! Thanks so much for the idea!
I have tried to make this recipe multiple times with different sized dishes. Every time there is soo much liquid in the “creamy” layer that I have no room for any other color. I am just going to serve the blue layer at my daughter’s birthday since it’s a mermaid theme party.
I am sorry to hear that. Maybe just you part of the creamy layer so you can add in more of the other colors?
Hi I’m in the process of making this recipe but i have one question are you explaining how to do it starting with which layer??? Sorry its a lil confusing

Hi the ingredients says 2 pkg of unflavored gelatin, 1 for the purple and 1 for the blue but your directions also says 1/2 gelatin with the condensed milk, so in total I am going to need 2 1/2 packages of unflavored gelatin? Because for step two & three it is 1/2 of unflavored gelatin correct?
Thanks:)
YES!! Thank you for pointing it out!
The same thing is happening to me. Very frustrating. Any ideas why?
Maybe the water is too hot? Very frustrating indeed or add in a little of the hot water to temper the mixture first? So sorry that is happening.
Sigh. This would have been so much easier if you had just given the directions for 9×13 size dish. Then no half this half that. I wrote out directions, doubled ingredient combinations then rewrote directions as well as I need large size for a party. Curdling has been the biggest problem. And it is JUST JELLO! So beautiful, I hope it works this time. Second go around.
Have you re-read your comment??? Why be so harsh??
Help please!!!
I want to make this for my granddaughters 1st b-day party this weekend (mermaid theme) but we can only find unflavored gelitan in bulk so I’m wondering if someone could let me know how much to add to each section that needs it??
You need to add 1/2 pkg of gelatin to EACH of the milk layers at least.
I made this jello to take for Easter and also made one to have at home for my kids. I tried ours before we went to family’s just to see how it was and it’s horrible!!! It turned out just like it’s supposed to and looks beautiful but the texture is disgusting! If I ever try to make it again I wouldn’t add all the unflavored gelatin and Just use the jello, it is SOOOO rubbery!!
SO sorry you didn’t like the texture Pauline. I am glad that it looked pretty though.
Hi there, just wanted to clarify that pkg is short for package when written in relation to the gelatin and also how much a packet of gelatin weighs as we have a few size options here in Australia!
Also does this need to be eaten the day of making or would it be ok to make a day or two before hand do you think? Thanks
I am sorry- I did not think of weights for gelatin- they are 1 oz pkgs.
You can make a day ahead but I would not go more than 2 days
2 1/2 envelopes of Unflavored gelatin, what does envelope mean? Does that mean 2 1/2 boxes?
Depending on your box size of gelatin that you purchase- I use KNOX Gelatine – it comes in a box that has 4 envelopes. I used 2-1/2 envelopes.
Hi, I’m going to try this for a party soon. Just wondering how far in advance can I make it? How long will it last?
I would say 2 days would be the limit to make ahead of time.
