Now is the time to start thinking about planning your Summer getaway. We are starting to look at a few different options for road trips and vacations and Hog Island Wildlife located in Virginia has something for everyone in the family. The Founders District offers 8 destinations that play a large role in the American story. If you have a history buff in your family, this is definitely must-see.

Plan Your Summer Getaway to The Founders District and Hog Island

From the 17th century practice by English settlers of allowing hogs to forage at the tip of a peninsula jutting into the lower James River came the name Hog Island. Today, this “island” is the largest of several tracts that make up the Hog Island Wildlife Management Area.

Nature at its Finest

There is the opportunity to see eagles, an array of shorebirds, and even upland wildlife species on some parts of Hog Island. Serene and tranquil, be sure to bring your camera for the amazing landscapes. Don’t be surprised to see waterfowl, often by the thousands, to forage and rest on the tidal marshes, diked impoundments and planted fields. A stunning sight to see.

Other Things to Do

Fishing is allowed in designated areas and there is a boat launch on the management area at Lawnes Creek. Be sure to have the right permits handy when visiting.

There is a hiking trail that is roughly 6 miles that loops and is good for all levels. This hiking trail features a lake and is dog friendly as long as your pet is kept on a leash.

Hog Island is a nature lovers paradise. This is a great spot to check out for a day trip if you are spending time near Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement. I know my kids need to have physical activity even when we are vacationing and Hog Island looks like the perfect place to spend the day unplugged, hiking, fishing and swimming.
