This Maine Bead Shop Lets You Create One-Of-A-Kind Jewelry With Beads From Around The World

Handmade beads from Kenya, Ghana, Tibet, and Nepal are sharing shelf space with beads crafted right here at home. I love that idea.

It’s a tiny world tour you can wear on your wrist.

The list keeps going, too. Nigeria, Mali, the Philippines, the Czech Republic, Thailand, and Indonesia all show up in the lineup.

Then come freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals, bone, wood, and shells.

This Maine shop doesn’t just hand you a bag of beads and wave goodbye. There’s a workshop where you can sit down and build your own piece.

Friendly staff stand ready when your clasp refuses to cooperate.

You can also bring in a broken necklace and leave with a fresh design. Or book a party and turn your friends into jewelry makers for a night.

So what would you string together first?

Few shops let you shop eleven countries without leaving one room. ABOCA Beads & Jewelry pulls that off in downtown Damariscotta.

The shelves carry hand-made beads from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, and beyond.

The global list stretches even further. You’ll spot pieces from the Philippines, the Czech Republic, Tibet, Nepal, Thailand, and Indonesia.

That’s a lot of travel stamps for a bracelet.

Each region brings its own flavor to the table. Some beads feel bold and bright, while others lean earthy and calm.

Mixing them is half the fun.

Here’s a smart move for first-timers. Pick one bead you can’t stop staring at.

Then build the rest of your design around it.

That approach keeps you from freezing in front of hundreds of choices. Trust me, decision overload is real in a place like this.

One anchor bead gives you a clear starting point.

The best part is the story you get to wear. A necklace with beads from Ghana and Nepal starts conversations.

Your friends will ask where you found it, and you’ll have a great answer ready.

Maine Makers Get Their Spotlight, Too

World travelers are great, but hometown talent deserves a seat at the table. The shop carries a large variety of locally handcrafted beads and pendants.

That means your design can include a little piece of Maine.

I’m all for that combination. A bead from Thailand next to one made nearby feels like a fun handshake across oceans.

It’s global and local in the same strand.

Local pieces also make thoughtful souvenirs. Instead of a magnet for the fridge, you get something you’ll actually wear.

And it still says you visited the Pine Tree State.

Try pairing a local pendant with simple supporting beads. Let the handmade piece be the star of the show.

Too many loud beads can steal its thunder.

This also works well for gift shopping. Someone who loves the coast would treasure a necklace with a locally crafted pendant.

You can tailor the colors to their style.

Supporting local artists feels good, too. Your purchase helps creative people keep doing what they love.

Plus, you walk away with jewelry that nobody back home can buy at the mall.

Pearls, Crystals, And Bone All Live Under One Roof

Variety is the name of the game here. ABOCA Beads & Jewelry stocks freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals, and a range of gems.

Then the list widens to glass, stone, wood, bone, and shells.

That mix covers pretty much every mood. Want something sparkly for a fancy night?

Crystals have your back.

Craving a beachy, relaxed look instead? Shells and wood beads bring that easygoing feel.

Stone beads land somewhere in between, natural but polished.

A tip worth keeping in mind is texture. Mixing smooth pearls with rough stone adds interest without extra color.

It makes simple designs look more thoughtful.

Weight matters, too. Stone and glass feel heavier than wood or bone.

If you want comfy earrings, lighter materials usually work better for all-day wear.

Semi-precious stones are a strong pick for anyone who likes natural colors. Each one has its own swirls and shades.

No two beads look exactly alike, which fits the one-of-a-kind goal perfectly.

Take your time browsing every section. You might come in for pearls and leave obsessed with bone beads.

That’s allowed.

Shopping is nice, but making is better. The store has an onsite workshop where you can sit and build your own piece.

You can work quietly or join an interactive learning session.

That flexibility is a big deal. Some folks love chatting while they create.

Others want peace, quiet, and a pile of beads.

Not sure where to begin? Kits are available to make right in the store.

You can also take one home for a rainy afternoon project.

Kits are a great choice for beginners. Everything you need comes together, so there’s no guessing.

You just follow along and enjoy the process.

The staff is happy to step in when things get tricky. Clasps and knots can be stubborn little puzzles.

A helping hand saves a lot of frustration.

Bringing kids? Keep the project simple and short.

Small hands do better with bigger beads and easy patterns.

Leave yourself some extra time, too. Designing jewelry tends to swallow hours without warning.

You’ll look up and wonder where the afternoon went, but you’ll have something beautiful to show for it.

Got a design living rent-free in your head? The team at ABOCA Beads & Jewelry loves helping customers with custom designs.

They work with you to turn that idea into something you can wear.

This option is perfect if you love jewelry but not the fiddly work. You bring the vision and pick the colors.

The experts help handle the building.

Owner Judy Dumont brings metalsmithing experience to the mix. That skill opens doors for specific or custom-made pieces.

It’s a nice bonus when a project needs more than string and beads.

To make the process smooth, come prepared. Bring photos of styles you like.

A picture of your favorite outfit can help, too.

Think about how you’ll wear the piece. Daily jewelry needs to be sturdy and comfortable.

A special-event necklace can be bolder and a bit more delicate.

Custom work also makes a meaningful gift. Birthstones, favorite colors, or a bead from a special place can tell a personal story.

That kind of present beats a gift card every single time.

That Broken Necklace In Your Drawer Deserves A Comeback

Almost everyone has a sad pile of broken jewelry somewhere. Snapped strands, lonely earrings, a clasp that gave up.

Good news: there’s hope for them.

ABOCA Beads & Jewelry offers repair and redesign services. Old or broken items can come back to life.

Some even get a whole new look.

Repair is great for pieces you love exactly as they are. Grandma’s necklace probably doesn’t need a makeover.

It just needs to hold together again.

Redesign is where things get exciting. Beads from an outdated piece can become a fresh bracelet or modern earrings.

You keep the memories but upgrade the style.

Before you visit, gather everything from that drawer. Even loose beads might be useful.

A pile of leftovers could turn into something surprising.

It’s also a smart, low-waste choice. Reusing materials keeps good beads out of the trash.

And it often feels more special than buying something brand new.

Sentimental pieces carry stories nobody else can replace. Giving them a second life lets you wear those stories again.

That’s a pretty sweet trade for a tangled mess.

Weekly Classes Turn Beginners Into Bead Pros

Silk knotting sounds fancy, doesn’t it? It’s one of the skills you can learn in the classes here.

Wire work is on the menu, too.

ABOCA Beads offers classes on a weekly schedule. That makes it easier to fit one into a busy week.

Missing one session isn’t the end of the world.

Classes cover a range of skills and interest levels. Brand-new crafters can start with the basics.

More experienced makers can pick up fresh techniques.

Why take a class instead of watching videos? Real-time help makes a huge difference.

Someone can spot your mistake before it turns into a knotted disaster.

Silk knotting is a classic method for pearl necklaces. Small knots between beads add polish and protection.

If one strand breaks, fewer beads go rolling across the floor.

Wire work opens up even more design options. You can shape loops, wraps, and custom connectors.

It gives your pieces a handmade edge.

Here’s a tip for class day. Bring a small notebook to jot down steps.

Your future self will thank you when you try it again at home.

Birthdays Get A Lot More Sparkly With A Bead Party

Cake is great, but cake plus jewelry? That’s a party upgrade.

ABOCA Beads & Jewelry hosts birthday parties, social gatherings, and even a Night Out with Friends.

The shop provides the venue, dishes, utensils, and party decorations. You just bring your choice of food and beverages.

That cuts down on planning stress big time.

Birthday parties get a special project created for you and your guests. Everyone works on something designed for the occasion.

Then each guest goes home with their own creation.

Social events can work a little differently. Guests may rotate through the classroom space to make their pieces.

It keeps things moving and gives everyone a turn.

This kind of party works for many ages. Kids love making bracelets, and adults enjoy it just as much.

Honestly, grown-ups might get even more competitive about color choices.

Plan ahead when booking a group event. Think about your guest count and what kind of project fits the crowd.

Simple designs work best for younger groups.

The best part is the party favor. Nobody leaves with a plastic toy.

They leave wearing something they made themselves.

Twenty-Five Years Of Beads On Main Street Is Worth Celebrating

The year 2001 brought a new bead shop to Damariscotta. Bernie and Christine DeLisle opened ABOCA Beads & Jewelry that year.

Now the shop is marking its 25th anniversary.

Judy Dumont bought the business in March 2018. She had worked there part-time before taking over.

That’s a pretty great promotion story.

You’ll find the shop at 157 Main St, Damariscotta, ME 04543. It sits right in the heart of downtown.

Artistic shops, restaurants, and galleries line the same street.

That location makes it easy to plan a full day. Browse beads, grab lunch, and wander the galleries.

Then come back if you still can’t stop thinking about that perfect bead.

Hours run 10 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday. Sunday hours are 10 AM to 4 PM.

Give yourself plenty of time if you plan to make something.

A quarter-century is a big milestone for any small business. It shows how much this creative space means to the area.

Coastal Maine has plenty of shops, but this one lets you leave with a story you made yourself.
