4 North Carolina Seafood Shacks That Sink & 4 That Reel You Right Back In

As a coastal state, North Carolina boasts some of the freshest seafood around, but not all seafood shacks are created equal.

Last summer, my family and I embarked on a seafood pilgrimage along the Carolina shores, sampling everything from buttery crab legs to crispy fried flounder.

We discovered some places that left us disappointed and others that had us planning our next visit before we’d even paid the bill.

Here’s my honest take on which spots to skip and which are worth every penny.

1. Shuckin’ Shack (Inland Location)

Nestled far from the coast, Shuckin’ Shack’s inland location surprises many. Its rustic charm and nautical decor invite diners into a sea of flavors. Here, the clamor of laughter blends with the enticing aroma of fresh seafood. Families gather around nautical-themed tables, sharing tales and platters of shrimp.

While it lacks ocean views, it compensates with hearty dishes and a warm atmosphere. The shack’s commitment to quality ingredients is evident in each bite. Regulars praise the shrimp tacos as a must-try. Shuckin’ Shack proves that distance from the ocean doesn’t diminish the seafood experience.

2. Surf City Crab

On Surf City’s sun-kissed shores, Surf City Crab gleams as a beacon for seafood lovers. The shack’s reputation for fresh, succulent crab draws a bustling crowd. Diners are treated to ocean views and the rhythmic lull of waves.

Outdoor seating provides the perfect backdrop for indulging in their renowned crab legs. Each bite speaks of freshness and quality, attributes that set this shack apart. Savoring the seafood here feels like a cherished summer memory. The friendly staff adds to the welcoming vibe, making Surf City Crab a favorite among locals and tourists.

3. Rick’s Seafood

Amidst a bustling harbor, Rick’s Seafood stands as a testament to tradition and taste. Known for its fresh catch, this shack draws patrons with its classic fish and chips. The scent of fried fish mingles with the sea breeze, creating an irresistible allure.

Fishermen arrive with daily hauls, ensuring unmatched freshness. Visitors relish the crispy batter and tender fish, a delightful contrast of textures. Rick’s history is intertwined with the harbor’s, offering a slice of local culture with every meal. It’s a taste of maritime life served on a plate.

4. Skippers Of Thomasville

In the heart of Thomasville, Skippers offers a unique seafood escape. Its vintage signage and small-town charm set it apart. Regulars rave about the fried seafood baskets, a comforting choice for many.

The ambiance is enhanced by local musicians, often seen playing harmonica outside. This adds a nostalgic touch to the dining experience. Skippers’ commitment to quality and flavor is evident, making each visit memorable. The shack serves as a beloved gathering spot, where food and community intertwine.

For those seeking a taste of tradition, Skippers delivers with every meal.

5. Treasure Trove: Waterfront Seafood Shack

After a string of disappointments, Waterfront Seafood Shack in Calabash restored my faith in North Carolina seafood. Their shrimp and grits literally made me close my eyes and savor each bite—creamy stone-ground grits topped with plump shrimp that tasted like they jumped from the ocean to my plate.

The owner, Miss Betty, still works the register most days and remembers regulars by name and order. When she spotted me photographing my perfectly fried flounder, she stopped by to make sure everything was to my liking and shared the secret to their crispy coating (hint: it involves buttermilk).

The prices won’t break the bank either—our family of four ate like royalty for under $75. I’ve already planned our return trip for their legendary Sunday seafood brunch.

6. Catch Of The Day: Captain Stanley’s Seafood

Captain Stanley’s in Raleigh proves you don’t need to be coastal to serve outstanding seafood. Their daily deliveries from the North Carolina shore ensure everything tastes ocean-fresh, even though you’re dining inland. The crab cakes—mostly crab with just enough binding to hold them together—made me want to applaud the chef.

What really sets this place apart is their commitment to sustainable fishing. Each menu item tells you where and how the seafood was caught, and they refuse to serve anything overfished or harvested irresponsibly.

My server, Jim, was a former commercial fisherman who could tell stories about every species on the menu. His recommendation of the blackened mahi-mahi with mango salsa was spot-on—perfectly spiced without overwhelming the delicate fish flavor.

7. Hook, Line And Sinker: Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar (Carolina Beach)

Not to be confused with its disappointing namesake elsewhere, the Carolina Beach location of Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar is a completely different experience. Their raw bar features at least eight different oyster varieties daily, each labeled with its origin and flavor profile like a fine wine list.

The bartender, Mike, is an oyster encyclopedia who guided me through a tasting flight paired with local craft beers. When he noticed I was particularly enjoying the Stump Sound oysters, he brought me an extra half-dozen “on the house” just because he loved my enthusiasm.

Beyond oysters, their blackened fish tacos with homemade slaw and spicy aioli had me contemplating a permanent move to Carolina Beach. This place understands that fresh seafood needs minimal interference—just respectful preparation and thoughtful presentation.

8. Seaside Sensation: (Beach Branch)

In a plot twist I didn’t see coming, Ever After in the Woods’ coastal location completely redeems the brand name. Unlike its inland disaster of a sister restaurant, this oceanfront gem serves seafood that makes you want to kiss the chef.

Their lobster roll—served Connecticut-style with warm butter on a toasted split-top bun—contains generous chunks of sweet meat without unnecessary fillers. The restaurant’s relationship with local fishermen means their daily specials truly reflect what was caught that morning.

The outdoor deck overlooks the Atlantic, providing the perfect backdrop for enjoying their signature seafood boil: shrimp, crab, clams, corn, and potatoes seasoned perfectly with Old Bay and lemon. I’ve never seen my usually reserved father-in-law lick his fingers in public until this meal—that’s how good it was.
