Gender Neutral Baby Shower Cupcakes
Ingredients
Cake box mix + ingredients to make it
4 oz. blue fondant (or whatever color you choose)
1 oz. white fondant
Cornstarch for rolling
4 sticks butter
8 cups confectioners’ sugar
2 tsp vanilla
4-6 tbsp milk
Blue Sprinkles (or whatever color you choose)
Yields: About 24 cupcakes
Directions
Prepare your cupcakes according to the box’s directions. Allow to cool completely before decorating. (Cake box mix usually yields 24 cupcakes)
Line a baking sheet with wax paper and set aside. Fold your blue and white fondant together to form a light blue shade. On a surface lightly covered with cornstarch, roll fondant to be about ¼ of an inch thick.
We used icing tips (Wilton #1M and #5 ) to form the fondant buttons. First, you’ll want to cut out button shapes from the bottom of Wilton tip # 1m. Then, you’ll use the bottom of Wilton tip #5 to mark the smaller circle within your button. Use the other end of the tip to mark 4 small button holes in the middle of your fondant. Place each button on your lined baking sheet. Brush off the excess cornstarch if necessary.
Using either a handheld or stand mixer, beat butter, sugar, vanilla, and milk on high. You’ll want your buttercream to form stiff peaks. Add confectioners’ sugar to stiffen it up or milk to loosen it (one tablespoon at a time).
With a piping bag, frost each cupcake. Top with sprinkles and then add your fondant buttons on the top center.
These are so easy to make and can definitely be made well ahead of time. If you want even more of a time saver- simply buy pre-made cupcakes from your favorite bakery and add these adorable toppers for a unique baby shower theme.
