For as long as I can remember my hair has always been thin. I have a lot of it but it is definitely thin and as I like to call it – cat hair. I have always been a lover of how hair extensions look but I was afraid of the damage and the breakage. I finally got up enough courage after doing online research to give Natural beaded Rows by DKW Styling a try.
Why Natural Beaded Rows
I spent some time on Instagram looking over before and after photos of Natural Beaded Rows hair extensions and I loved what I saw. Not only could you make your hair longer if you chose to but fuller as well. I was looking for the fuller option as my hair was already below my shoulders. I loved all of the color combinations that I saw and I contacted DKW Styling directly to see if there was a stylist in New York that was trained in her methods. It turned out their was one about 1 hour away, I called and booked an appointment.
Natural Beaded Rows – NBR Review
So the first thing that I had to do was send my stylist some photos of the state that my hair was currently in so that she could determine if I was a good candidate for Natural beaded Rows. As luck would have it, I was – perfect! It was then explained that the hair would be purchased first and that it usually takes about a week to come in. Not a problem I was ready to go!
On the day of my appointment I met with my extremely knowledgable technician and she explained ALL of my questions…. and I had many! She also went over pricing, dos and donut’s of Natural beaded Rows BEFORE she touched my hair. I signed on the dotted line and she went to work.
The stylist ended up putting in one row with six wefts of hair. She methodically sewed the string into my existing hair constantly asking if it felt good and wasn’t too tight. It felt like a headband… that kind of pressure on your hair. The whole process took about an hour including a quick hair cut to blend in my layers and a quick curl with the curling iron.
I could not be happier with the results. For the first time in my life my hair feels and looks thick, healthy and pretty. If you would like me to give my stylist your information, please leave a comment and I will happily forward it along to her. She was fun, professional, and knowledgable and I highly recommend her. She has now become my hair stylist. So- what do you think?
*** Update- My stylist has updated her pricing because of the training and courses she has taken. Please review her website for the most up-to-date pricing. Also she has been able to take my hair from BLACK to BLONDE with no damage over the course of 6 months. She is extremely talented!
***UPDATE – 3/2018 – NEW POST is LIVE!!!! I have put my NBR extensions back in and my hair is now BLONDE!!!! Check it out!
**** This is the hair dryer I use with my extensions, it totally cuts down on the dry time!
Hello, would you tell me about the price? Also, how did you go about tipping? I’m assuming you don’t tip on purchasing the hair itself? How is the maintenance? Where about in NY did you get this done? Thank you!
Hi Nicole-
The cost for just the hair itself is $300 and it was purchased prior to my appointment. The cost for placing in one row of NBR was $150 and it took about an hour. I did not tip on the hair itself but the skill of the stylist in placing them. The maintenance has been great, I am going back this week to have them taken out and put back in. You receive a wet brush with your extensions to make sure you don’t tangle and use a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner to ensure the hair doesn’t dry out. My stylist is located in Montgomery, Ny. If you would like her contact info just leave an email. xo
I read your comment in regards to the pricing. You mentioned the extension itself was $300 and the color & cut was $150….So (I know this sounds silly but..) the total for the entire service was under $500?
The hair extensions themselves are a one time cost of $300. You can use them over and over. They eventually get thinner but I had mine in for over 5 months and they were still good! The cost for putting them in and cut was $150 not color! Totally worth it, in my opinion.
Hello! Your hair looks great. I’ve been looking into Natural Beaded Rows recently and I’m so happy I found your review. I live about 45 minutes from Montgomery. Could you tell me the name of your stylist and the salon? It seems every stylist I find is always on the West Coast!
sure – just email me at jenn_inthewoods@aol.com
She’s great!
Can you forward me the stylists information please?! Thank you!!
I sent you an email!

HiJenn, your hair looks great! I recently had brain surgery to remove a non cancerous brain tumor. They had to shave part of the hair behind my ear. My hair is already thin so I need something to make up for that shaved area to wear my hair down. I currently have an appointment set up for NBR. I already paid $250 for 14 inch hair. After reading this I am concerned I am paying too much. My stylist is charging me another $350 to install and cut and blend the hair no color. When you called DKW salon did they happen to inform you of their pricing? I just don’t understand why NBR would cost $200 more in Denver than in New York.
Thank you Erin for stopping by! My guess is that every stylist has their own prices for cuts/styles/etc. My salon is not in New York City …. I live in a rural area, that could be also!
Hi Erin –
How did your hair extensions turn out?
I live in the Denver area and would love to hear about your extensions and the hair stylist experience.
Best,
Ana
Hi,
Prices for all extensions are different, just like color, cut styling etc. just because one stylist purchased hair that costs $300 doesn’t mean everyone uses that same quality of hair. And $150 to put them in is INSANELY inexpensive. It is all dependent on what the stylist makes per hour with other services and what they need to make per the time it is taking. $450 is the lowest price I have ever heard anyone doing this service for.
agreed i include color with my service by i charge $550 on top of the hair that is 300
i don’t know how anyone can do it for $150? and if all that took an hour she’s either rushing or doing only one row?
I only had one row of NBR put in at the time- no color, they looked fabulous and she did an AMAZING job! Not sure what her prices are for other services or additional process but I think they are definitely worth it.
Remember, I wasn’t paid to write this, I receive no discounts, there is absolutely nothing in it for me at all. I just think she did a great job and I was very happy with the quality of work she did so I wanted to share. Thanks for stopping by.
So have you taken them out. If so any balding or loss of hair. I’m considering them but also thinking of halo bc my goal is for my own hair to grow…thx
Hi Christie- I have since taken mine out and went for a short bob for something different. I did not have any loss of hair or balding or anything like that. I may actually put them back in this winter for another change of look. There was no damage at all on my hair. My stylist did an amazing job.
Hi Jenn! I’m saving up to get NBR, I know the hair itself will cost around $300, the placement is $150/row. I will be wanting color as well so they blend well, I’m thinking it will come to around $1000 total? My question is, how much would be a respectful tip? I know if we go off of food service rules, 15% is usually the minimum, so then I need to budget another $150 just to tip my stylist?
I’d love you input! Thanks!
Hi Amanda- I emailed you!
I would know about the tipping factor too! Anyway you can share this feedback as well?
Tip whatever you feel is appropriate to you … I usually do 20% or more if I am very happy with my service.
I need stylist details! I just discovered this and assumed that I would have to fly to LA to get amazing hair!
email me jenn_inthewoods@aol.com I will share!
Can you send me the salon info? I live in Manhattan!
send me an email jenn_inthewoods@aol.com
Hello- Would you mind sharing with me your stylist contact information?
Could I have the stylist info please
email sent!
What stylist you went to? I found obe but it is $1200. I am looking for one more affordable.
I think the cost varies on what you are having done( if the hair needs to be color treated or not) when I had mine in my hair was black so the extensions blended beautifully) so i am not sure what her pricing currently is for for NBR – as she is currently lifting out my black for another color – so excited! but here is her FB page.
Hi I’ve been researching a salon offering NBR near PA since last summer. Your hair looks amazing! Would you mind sending me the name of the salon and your stylist’s contact info. Thanks!
Here is her website http://www.extensionsbyshaina.com/ She is amazing!
Hi. How many grams of hair do you have?
I had one row put in- not sure what the grams are.
Can you please the name of the salon and person that did your NBR. I would love to have this done.
http://www.extensionsbyshaina.com/ Let her know I sent you! She is AWESOME and I can’t wait to get them done again.
Hi Jenn, your hair looks great! I recently moved closer to Montgomery and I was thinking of getting hair extensions. I saw the website link you listed for your stylist and I was curious to see if she charges a fee for the initial consultation? I started filling out the application and it said expect the first session to be around $1,200. Just trying to figure out if this is an option for me. Thank you 🙂
Yes- it is definitely worth it- i think anyway. If you have been insecure about your hair for whatever reason it is worth investing in yourself. Her prices have gone up since my initial time but she is worth it. She knows what she is doing not only with NBR but color too. My hair is now blonde with NO DAMAGE, I think it is actually healthier than before.
Hi Jenn! I just wanted to put it out there that my salon is certified in NBR and have taken classes with Shaina in CA with Danielle, the creator of NBR. She’s fantastic and we are sooo thrilled to be offering this method of extensions in my salon! I am certified as well as one of my stylists, Lizz. If anyone is in the PA area or near, please get in touch with us, we would love to meet you!
Hi Nicole- Thanks for visiting!
Hi Jen, thank you for educationg me. I just spoke with a women that is NBR certified in my area and she stated that she charges anywhere from $1200-1500 with a 500 non refundable deposit that goes towards the service. She said that the move ups are every 6-8 weeks at a charge of $155-300.this is. It including any shampoo, conditioner, cut or color……do you have any idea as to why in my small town here in Gig Harbor WA it would be soooooo much more expensive???
Thank you,
Leah
Not sure- I do know that my stylist has upped her prices as well recently because she has taken more classes, improves her education on the topic, etc. I think every stylist is different. I am planning on having them put back in during march/april so I will keep you updated as to how it goes and how much it costs. Keep in mind when I put them in it was 2 years ago….
So why just one row? I think yours looks amazing.
Thank you! At the time that was all I wanted. I am having them put back in March with my new blonde hair color and can’t wait!! So stay tuned!
I had my nbr extensions taken out after almost 3 months due to my stylist became to expensive. I was left with a couple of bald spots, thinning hair and breakage. I only had them in since December. They pull on your hair, especially in the front where my most of the breakage and baldspots were. I’m going to stick to clip ins.
Hi Jennifer, I am sorry you had a bad experience with your NBR – I loved mine while they were in and can’t wait to have them back in March. Like I have mentioned I had no bald spots, thinning, nothing at all!
My stylist is amazing not only with her NBR experience and talent but her color is amazing as well. She took my hair literally from jet black to white with no damage. I can not say enough about how great she is!!
If you did not find a NBR stylist in your area I am a Certified NBR stylist in Georgia, close to Chattanooga, Tn. My email is hodsonhair@gmaik if so can be of any assistance. I may be able to find a NBR stylist in Montgomery for you.
Hey jen I wanted to ask you about your breakage experience you had in such a short amount of time… do you have lile before and after you’d be willing to send me? I’m setting up. Telephone consult for these and reading your comment made me nervous… had you had extensions before if so what kind and what was your experience.
Hey- I am not sure what you read but I have had NO BREAKAGE at all. In fact I just had them put back in 2 weeks ago – I have another post scheduled for Monday with a video that shows the whole process. I could not be happier with the extensions-no breakage, no damage at all for me!
I’d prefer you to respond via email as I don’t check websites much:0) Anyway, I actually have a TON of questions for you regarding this process. I’m looking into it, in fact, teaching summer school so I can pay for them. And tonight, I meet with the lady that is going to do it just to answer questions….however, I’d like to hear from someone that actually has them done. First question…..I would like them put in next month….however, I have 3 boys…we SWIM and we vacation at the beach. Will they be destroyed by these activities? I have others too, but I’ll start there and eagerly await your emal!
Hello Shara,
Please feel free to email me at jenn_inthewoods@aol.com I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can also refer to my new post here – http://everafterinthewoods.com/2018/03/26/love-natural-beaded-rows-hair-extensions/
To touch on the question you asked- NBR uses real hair in the extensions so it will be affected by the chlorine and salt water just like your own hair would. I usually use a deep conditioner once a week or twice during the summer because my own hair tends to get dry. If you are doing alot of swimming I would probably wear a swim cap.
Hi!
I love the contact information for this technician please as well! ?

Hi. I have a question. I have had NBR for 4 months and am not having a great experience. Mine just matte up and get tangled. I took one row out after month two and put a new one in. Now that row is tangling up as well. I use al the products they recommend. Any tips ? I really want to love it but am considering just ending it.
I am sorry you are having problems… I never experienced anything like that. I used Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner when I washed and when I was drying the hair I sectioned it off after a good towel dry. I hope this helps and good luck!
I had it done . I had 3 rows. I felt it is too much hair. It knots up so quick to the point where it’s so annoying. Secondly, it is so hard to sleep on those beads on my scalp. I wake up with a huge bundle if natted har and knots and a headache.
Please advise. I am so annoyed and considering removing the whole thing.
Pa
I am so sorry you are not happy. Ive had two full rows and then one full row and a mini. I use a wet brush to brush through and a deep conditioner. I would contact your stylist to see what she suggests.
They look great but I experienced extreme pain, major headaches and a itchy rash on my scalp and all over my body. I was allergic to the metal beads. Super painful to sleep on at night. Not worth it. Wasted lots of money because I took them out after 5 days.
Oh No! I am so sorry to hear that. I want to say that my hair stylist uses plastic beads, not sure if that would make a difference or not.
How do I find a stylist near me in Buffalo NY?
Hi Missy,
When I was looking for a stylist I contacted Danielle (the founder of Natural Beaded Rows) directly. Here is their website https://dkwstylingsalon.com/
