What is a Texas Sheet cake?

It is a large cake baked in a sheet pan (13x 18) covered in chocolate frosting with pecans in the frosting. We omitted the nuts in the recipe because we do not like them. (I know, say it ain’t so!) Instead we topped ours with rainbow sprinkles. The nuts are listed in the recipe below in case you like them, if not simply omit like we do.

The Best Chocolate Texas Sheet Cake Recipe

Ingredients

Cake-

2 cups flour

2 cups sugar

1 tsp salt

4 TBSP cocoa

2 sticks butter, unsalted

½ cup buttermilk

1 cup boiling water

2 eggs, beaten

1 tsp baking soda

1 TBSP vanilla extract

Chocolate Frosting-

4 TBSP cocoa powder

3 cups powdered sugar

6 TBSP  milk

1 ¾ stick butter, unsalted

½ cup chopped pecans (optional)

Directions

For the cake-

Spray a 13 x18 sheet pan with non-stick spray and preheat oven to 350.

In a saucepan melt the butter and cocoa, stir. Add the water and bring to a boil. Turn off heat.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda. Add the chocolate mixture and combine.

Add buttermilk, eggs and vanilla and mix thoroughly making sure all the ingredients are combined.

Pour into prepared sheet pan and bake for 20 minutes.

Cool completely.

For the frosting-

Melt better in a small saucepan. Add the cocoa and stir to combine. Turn off heat. Add the milk, sugar and vanilla and mix until smooth. (add pecans here if desired) Pour over cake and even out the frosting. Top with sprinkles if desired.

Cut into squares and serve.

This cake is delicious and feeds many people. We like making this the day before we have guests so that we can serve it for a few desserts. This would also be a great cake to bring to a pot luck or barbecue. My kids absolutely love this one!
